Celebrating Black Excellence with Special Guests

JANUARY 13, 2023, Burnaby B.C.

ABOUT THIS EVENT

The Respect, Diversity, and Inclusion (RDI) Office, along with Diversity Circles, is inviting you to join them to honour Black Excellence Day on January 13.

We have invited three speakers, BCIT Alum Orene Askew, aka DJ O’Show, Lama Mugabo, and Anthonia Ogundele, to talk about what Black Excellence means to them and what people can do to support Black Excellence. The panel will be moderated by BCIT Alum Sharad Khare.

Since 1858, Black communities and people of African descent have been an integral part of this province. They continue to shape the cultural, economic, political, and social successes that we enjoy today.

The term ‘Black excellence’ was born out of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. While there is a long history of outstanding Black British Columbians, from political figures such as Emery Barnes and Rosemary Brown to cultural icons such as Eleanor Collins and Harry Jerome, today is a day to recognize those who are inspiring us all. From writers, scientists, business leaders, athletes, and teachers to everyday people, the contributions of Black Canadians have made – and continue to make – a positive difference.

At the same time, we recognize that the Black community continues to face disproportionate barriers as a result of systemic racism and discrimination. Equity and anti-racism work are foundational to all our efforts to build a genuinely inclusive community.

This important initiative speaks to our dedication to supporting recommendations from our Anti-racism Framework released in April 2021. We will continue to work towards a more equitable, respectful, diverse, and inclusive environment at BCIT.

Expectations for Behaviour

Diversity Circles has always benefitted from our community’s empathy, sincerity, and respectful curiosity. This has helped create events and initiatives where we hold productive and authentic discussions, advancing our knowledge and utilization of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.

As our events and initiatives continue to reach out to diverse audiences, we realize that having a set of expectations for behaviour will help maintain the accountable, respectful spaces our community has come to expect from Diversity Circles events and initiatives.

Please take the time to review our Expectations for Behaviour prior to your upcoming participation.
